Critter Guard’s Pole Guard helps to deter squirrels from gaining access to pole mounted equipment and/or connected power lines and subsequently causing electricity outages. Two plate halves go around your power line pole. The plate halves, along with the other products included in the Pole Guard kit will block squirrels and other critters from crawling up the pole in the first place, which in return keeps critters off your power line. Once the animal encounters the plates, the critter is forced to the perimeter of the plates where seven rollers hanging on the plate halves will make it difficult for the critters to get past since they spin as the animal tries to climb up.
You can purchase the kit for different pole types:
Includes two plate halves, four locking pins, 4 long spiral shank nails, twelve stainless-steel ties, four clamps, seven rollers, and installation instructions.
Includes two plate halves, four locking pins, 4 large L-Brackets, twelve stainless-steel ties, four clamps, seven rollers, and the installation instructions.
Together the pole guard components are packed in a heavy-duty plastic bag and shipped in a cardboard box. For smaller diameter poles less than 11” in diameter, a 38” flex tubing and coupling is required to wrap around the pole just above the Pole Guard plates to fill any gap between the pole and the Pole Guard system. This Flex Tube and coupler is an additional cost option.
Pole Guard is for a single pole. For new transmission/distribution lines, we recommend one Pole Guard kit for each pole – especially in rural areas where to mitigate expensive service calls due to animal ingress on a pole. The standard Pole Guard plates are designed for round pole geometry. Please inquire at sales@critterguard.org if you have other geometry such as square/rectangular. Critter Guard also offers custom manufacturing service for specific geometry poles. If you have any other questions regarding our Pole Guard package, please feel free contact us at sales@critterguard.org.
Critter Guard is always looking for new and innovative ways to deter critters, squirrels, and all animals. Through our Pole Guard and our Line Guard, we have been able to do just that. By protecting your power line poles, you will in return limit access to the power lines from critters who cause power outages.
Our Pole Guard Package is not only good for power poles, but it can also be used around various other types of 10 to 12-inch diameter poles and even on select trees as well. This process works in the same way as the Pole Guard plate halves connect around the tree trunk. From there, the seven rollers are attached to the two halves to create a barrier against squirrels. Just beware that the tree will continue to grow (and expand) and you will need to remove Pole Guard from the tree when the tree gets that large.

The mines were successful in their trial of using Pole Guard and Line Guard to prevent monkeys from causing outages in the mines. We will be pursuing a long term strategy of using Critter Guard products across all the mines.
- Wikus Keller Branch Manager, CuAl Engineering, Benoni, South Africa
Hi Wikus. Due to your help Critter Guard now has added South Africa as a new customer territory and we are happy to work with you!
We use both Line Guard and Pole Guard to prevent squirrel outages at our substations and other locations. The combination of Pole Guard preventing access up the pole, and Line Guard preventing any travel on the line, is an unbeatable combination. We use both steel and wooden poles, and Pole Guard works on both.
